Resumen
Los mercados digitales en Estados Unidos están dominados por los gigantes tecnológicos, lo cual genera retos significativos a la economía en general. Han sido acusados de incurrir en prácticas desleales, como la autopreferencia en su función de intermediarios entre negocios de terceros y los usuarios de las plataformas. La Ley de Innovación y Elección en Línea de Estados Unidos (American Innovation and Choice Online Act, aicoa) fue la primera iniciativa en el Congreso federal estadounidense para regular la competencia económica en el mercado digital. No obstante el apoyo bipartidista y su promisoria aprobación, la iniciativa fracasó. Desde el enfoque institucional de la economía política, este artículo examina el contexto y contenido de la iniciativa de ley aicoa, los argumentos de grupos de interés simpatizantes y opositores, así como su capacidad de influir en los resultados legislativos. Para ello, se realizó un análisis cualitativo y temático de documentos, que se complementa con estadísticas sobre el poder cabildero de las grandes corporaciones
