Abstract
The study of old age in the United States emerged as a distinct field in the latter part of the 20th century, blending social and cultural history. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of research on the aging experience in the U.S. from the 17th century to the present, drawing from newspapers, books, and scholarly articles. The primary aim is to highlight that, while scientific research on aging gained momentum in the second half of the 20th century, it was also a period marked by broader societal reflection and collective efforts to address the challenges facing the elder.
